The HIAG aims to provide expert medical advice and guidance to the general public, private sector and Government organisations on the education, prevention and management of heat illness.

Read our consensus statement.

Exertional heat illness refers to a spectrum of illness related to an excessive rise in core body temperature during, or immediately after, physical activity or exercise. It is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality.

Climate change is increasing the frequency, severity, and duration of extreme heat events globally resulting in an increase in the incidence of non exertional (also known as ‘classic’) heat illness.

The Heat Illness Advisory Group aims to provide evidence-based guidance and expert recommendations  on the prevention recognition, diagnosis, and immediate management of exertional and non-exertional heat illness.

Our Team

We are a group of clinicians with extensive clinical and research experience in medical issues associated with endurance sports in elite, amateur and tactical athletes.

We share a common goal to improve pre-hospital management of EHI and reduce the associated morbidity and mortality.

Partners

We aim to collaborate with evidence-based partners in the field who share common goals to reduce morbidity and mortality related to heat-illness.

We hope to create a group focussed on education, high quality research and implementation of best practice.

Research

Our team are active members of the sports medicine and military communities and continue to participate in research into exertional heat illness.
